Spanish sports brand Joma opened a new store in Havana at the end of October. The company said it had opted for Spanish design and furnishings for the store, in the Carlos III area of the Cuban capital.

Two famous Cuban athletes, Ana Fidelia Quirot and Javier Sotomayor, were guests of honour at the store opening.

Ms Quirot won silver in the 800 metres at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and bronze at the Barcelona games four years earlier. She also won two golds in the same event at the World Championships in 1997 and 1995.

Javier Sotomayor won Olympic gold in the men’s high jump in Barcelona in 1992 and silver in Sydney in 2000. He still holds the world record, 2.45 metres, set (wearing kit supplied by Joma) in the Spanish city of Salamanca in July 1993.
