Alexium advances its fire retardant nylon

Chemical group Alexium has improved its fire retardant (FR) application for nylon, hoping this will lead to faster commercialisation and increased usage.

The non-halogenated FR chemistry can now be applied with standard “ovens”, which are present in many fabric finishing facilities, as well as with microwave technology. However, the company said that for some applications, such as the treatment of heat-sensitive polyolefins, the microwave technology is irreplaceable.

The product is marketed at military and industrial workwear fabrics, but can also be used in tents.

Alexium’s first licencee for the product, US-based textile distributor DuroTextiles, says it will be in production by the first quarter of next year.
