JD Sports turns focus on professionals

UK-based retailer JD Sports has opened a store selling high-tech apparel and equipment, aimed at professionals and consumers who are serious about sport.

The 8,000 square foot London-based shop has sports science graduates and professionals among its staff, and features equipment such as a gait machine.

It will focus mainly on football and running gear but will also cater for rugby, golf and hockey among other sports, and will roll-out the concept nationwide if it proves successful.

JD’s sports arm has defied expectations of flat sales by reporting a 3.5% rise for the three quarters ending November 20. Its fashion division, which includes Size? and Bank, suffered a 6.6% decline, bringing the overall total to a 1.5% rise.

In January, the company invested in Blacks, and has recently hired a new managing director for the outdoor retailer. Ken Reeve was previously buying and merchandising director at Cotswold Outdoor. “We have commenced investment into the Blacks stores and early signs are encouraging,” it said.
