Bangladesh: Workers strike over conditions after fire kills 120

26/11/2012
Factory workers have taken to the streets in Dhaka, Bangladesh, after a fire killed at least 120 people and injured more than 100 others on Saturday.

Workers at the Tazreen garment factory, which makes clothing for international brands, were reportedly trapped in narrow corridors and some of those who died had jumped from upper floors, trying to escape the blaze.

Last night, another fire broke out in a factory in the city, injuring eight, although no fatalities were reported.

Bangladesh is the world’s second largest apparel exporter after China, but inadequate pay and working conditions have seen thousands protest in recent months – with many hundreds out today, according to local media.

Tomorrow has been marked as a national day of mourning.
