Plans for the creation of a technical institute for readymade garments have been approved in the Silakot area of Pakistan, which could result in a doubling of exports to $700 million per year.

The area is already a hub for the production of martial arts uniforms – the world’s second biggest exporter after China. The former chairman of the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association, Ijaz Khokar, told local publication The Business Recorder: "We are seeing massive growth in exports of martial arts uniforms as the input cost in China is higher than in Pakistan.”

He added that by training workers at the technical institute, the export volume of readymade garments from Sialkot could increase to $700 million per year from the current $300 million to $350 million.

Pakistan’s Board of Commerce Ministry's Export Development Fund approved $23.4 million worth of projects yesterday, according to local press, including a grant for the National Institute of Leather Technology in Karachi. It now needs to secure funding from the Ministry of Finance.
