Italian navy to order protective baselayer clothing in merino wool

UK based protective clothing brand Armadillo Merino is preparing for a valuable order from the Italian navy.

Next-to-skin circular knitted tops and leggings in single jersey and rib structures, made from super-fine merino wool, are the products in demand to help navy personnel combat extreme weather or potential risk of fire or burns.

The company has said it expects interest from police authorities too, with a potential order for clothing for around 20,000 police officers from an unnamed European country already close to completion. The garments reduce perspiration rates, the brand said, resulting in increased levels of endurance.

“Wool has evolved over thousands of years to protect sheep in extremes of heat, humidity and cold. By combining modern technology with superfine merino wool, we have created a range of head-to-toe, high-performance garments that are so fine they have a silky feel,” said chief executive, Andy Caughey.
