Reebok to close offices in Amsterdam and Hong Kong

Reports in the US say sports brand Reebok is to close its European and Asian headquarters, in Amsterdam and Hong Kong respectively, as part of a global restructuring plan. The move will lead to 150 Reebok people losing their jobs. Jobs at its offices in Barcelona will also be lost.

Corporate websites for Reebok and parent group adidas offered no confirmation immediately following the reports, but the Boston Herald quoted an official statement from chief marketing officer, Matt O’Toole. The statement said a new “global-direct operating model” based in Canton, Massachusetts, would take over much of the work of the Amsterdam and Hong Kong teams. It also said Reebok wants to streamline its “satellite creation activities”.

Adidas wants Reebok to become a fitness-focused brand, specialising in training, running and walking.

The changes, which will come into effect at the start of 2013. Mr O’Toole said: “While I am convinced Reebok will emerge a stronger organisation and ultimately a more desirable brand for our fitness lifestyle consumer following today’s announcement, this is a difficult day for all of us.”
