Lenzing celebrates Tencel’s 20th anniversary

Fibre manufacturer Lenzing celebrated the 20th anniversary of the launch of its lyocell fibres by holding a commemorative ceremony and a customer symposium.

Its CEO Peter Untersperger said: “The development of the fibre over the last 20 years only marks the beginning of a success story which will continue for many decades to come. Tencel combines competitive production costs with the requirement of ensuring sustainable, environmentally compatible production.”

Twenty years ago the Tencel plant in Mobile, US, was the first large-scale industrial production site for the new lyocell fibers. The factory was originally built by British company Courtaulds, a former competitor, but Lenzing took over the facility when it acquired the Tencel Group in 2004.

The facility has been upgraded in recent years, and annual production capacity has been increased to the 50,000 tons.

Lenzing manufactures Tencel at three sites: Heiligenkreuz in Austria, where the annual capacity is 60,000 tons; Grimsby in the UK, featuring a capacity of 40,000 tons; and the Mobile, Alabama plant. A fourth production plant is being constructed in Lenzing in Upper Austria, where capacity is expected to be 60,000 tons annually.
