Reverdia begins sustainable succinic acid operations

Operations have begun at a new sustainable succinic acid plant in Italy. The plant, at Cassano Spinola in northern Italy, is the world’s first large-scale production facility for bio-based succinic acid.

It was set up by Reverdia, a joint venture between life sciences and materials sciences company DSM and Roquette Frères, a global producer of starch and starch-derivatives. At the time of the initial announcement in March 2012, Reverdia said the facility would be operational by the end of the year. It has a capacity of about 10,000 tonnes per year.

Key applications for the succinic acid, which has the product name Biosuccinium, include polybutylene succinate (PBS), polyester polyols for polyurethanes, coating and composite resins, phthalate-free plasticizers, and 1,4 butanediol. End products include footwear.

“We feel honoured and proud to open this new era in the lives of Reverdia and Biosuccinium,” said Reverdia’s general manager, Will van den Tweel, on announcing the start of operations. “The new phase will enable direct and indirect customers to start production of commercial-scale volumes of materials and end products based on bio-based succinic acid. These will be the first Biosuccinium-based products to find operational use in industry and to show up on retail shelves.”
