Now Benetton signs up for Detox campaign

The Benetton Group has become the latest high-profile fashion company to sign up for the Detox Programme initiated by campaign group Greenpeace in 2011. The programme’s aim is to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals in the textile industry globally by 2020.

Benetton said the move meant it was “furthering its existing commitment to environmental and social sustainability”.

In a statement, the Italian fashion group said its products have long met some of the strictest international consumer safety-driven manufacturing standards. “By joining the Detox Programme, Benetton will put in place additional measures across its entire supply chain that will allow for the implementation of even stricter standards and ensure that no hazardous chemicals are used by any suppliers it employs,” it said.

Speaking of the Benetton announcement, Greenpeace said the Italian firm would disclose discharge data from 30 global suppliers (including its own facilities) by the end of this year, “further accelerating the transparency revolution taking place in the fashion sector”. It said that making public information about what chemicals textile manufacturing plants were discharging in their effluent would empower people living near the facilities.
