Clothing entrepreneur says too much cost and complexity in supply chain

Ms Winser, who is about to launch a new online-only fashion brand and shopping site, has told the BBC that she believes “cutting out the middle man” gives her the chance to offer a better deal to consumers and a better chance of success, in spite of the challenging economic climate.
A former Marks & Spencer, Pringle and Aquascutum executive, Ms Winser said in a radio interview in the build-up to the launch of winserlondon.com that she had build her business in an entirely new way.
“We’ve cut out the middlemen,” she said. “The critical path can be different for different businesses, but at its worst you could start with a yarn and fabric supplier, who sells to a garment supplier, who then sells to a supply agent, who then sells to the brand, who possibly could sell to a selling agent, who would sell to wholesale accounts, who sell to retailers, who, in turn, may sell to an online, multi-brand retailer. So if you look at the size of that critical path, and everyone taking profit from and putting cost into the product, you can see how you can end up with a completely diferrent-value garment and also be slow to respond to customers’ desires.”
