New silicone-filled fabric offers water resistance and breathability

A new company, based in Indonesia and with production facilities in Italy, has launched a fabric which it says is the answer to achieving water resistance and breathability at the same time.

Founder Tadeusz Wierglos explained: “Air can transport moisture mechanically from a fabric from the inside out. However, diffusion ability does not exist in rain because there’s more moisture outside than in, and you cannot diffuse from gas to liquid. Typical membranes are not waterproof and breathable, they’re waterproof or breathable. I thought the ideal product would be to combine properties such as comfort, breathability and airflow with very high resistant against static water pressure.”

Elemental Technology uses a silicone polymer within the construction of fabric, which is cured, and then a membrane is added. It results in 100% waterproof, breathable cotton, or it can be used with synthetic material.

“When the moisture travels through the fabric it will not be retained, because there are no gaps - they are filled with the silicone polymer,” said Mr Wierglos, adding that he expects the company to add a production facility in Japan this year.
