Helmet makers to benefit from two-year study
11/02/2013
“Even the safest of helmets cannot offer optimum fit and protection if it is not right for the individual head size and shape of the wearer,” said Simone Morlock, project manager.
The resulting database will be applicable to all head protection systems, including those for cyclists, skaters, riders and water sports enthusiasts.
The institute claims the current standards do not contain the required measurement information for deriving 3D shapes. It also suggests that the data is country specific – for instance data collected in China or the US cannot be applied to Germany as different ethnic groups show differences in their body and head morphologies.
In addition to head shape, the project will also research facial measurements and provide dimensional correlations between the eye, nose, mouth and ears. Manufacturers will have access to specific sizing systems and there will also be standardised, virtual average 3D head shapes.
The project is due to conclude in the summer of 2014.
