New Patagonia merino baselayer line will help grassland project
13/02/2013
The Ovis XXI network has developed a brand, Ultimate Merino, for the wool fibre produced by its members. It says the fibres it selects from Patagonian sheep are cylindrical and of “exquisite softness”, making them especially suited to baselayer garments.
Patagonia is a purchaser of wool from Ovis XXI members and has said it aims to encourage farmers to raise their sheep in a way that supports the long-term health of the region of Patagonia in the far south of Argentina. It will create a new consumer product line using Ultimate Merino for release in autumn 2013. It has said that it wants all its merino baselayer garments and socks to use wool from Patagonian sheep.
From sales of the products the brand will put money into a project to restore grassland in the region that have withered owing to over-grazing; it wants to help attract other partners and buyers and assist Ovis XXI in putting in place “a sustainable sheep-grazing protocol”.
