Italy: Textile machine orders rise 46% in Q4

Orders index for textile machinery from Italian manufacturers rose by 46% in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared with the previous year, and were up 22% on Q3.

The figures from ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, show orders from the domestic market boosted these figures, rising 47% from the third quarter, with orders from international markets growing 20% from Q3.

“The fourth quarter data is comforting and a good omen for 2013, but we still need to consider that overall, 2012 closed with a decrease compared to 2011,” said ACIMIT president Sandro Salmoiraghi. “In fact, on an annual basis the orders index fell by 4%.

“In Italy, we’re registering the effects of an overall climate of scant confidence in the future, a fact that is common to businesses and families alike. We need reforms capable of promoting growth aimed at cutting business costs - starting from the cost of labour - while boosting investments in capital goods. These issues must be prioritised in the industrial policies enacted by the next government.

“Abroad, where our manufacturers realise 80% of their turnover, we need to work together in a structured manner. This is why we ask that Italian Trade Promotion Agency be provided with greater resources for promoting Made in Italy products in foreign markets, avoiding that public funds for internationalisation are wasted in many unstructured projects.”
