Chemicals groups BASF and Xinjiang Markor Chemical Industry are to build a China-based production facility for polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF), which is primarily used to make elastic spandex fibres for underwear, outerwear, sportswear and swimsuits.

BASF senior vice-president Dr. Guido Voit said it wanted to expand local production capacity to support its customers in the Chinese market.

The plant will be based in Korla, have a capacity of 50,000 tons per year and will be operational by 2015.

He Xiaorong, vice-president of Markor Group, said: “We are glad to partner with BASF, which provides its state-of-the-art PolyTHF technology to the joint venture. Thanks to our integrated value chain, we can achieve great synergies, enabling us to serve our customers better.”

BASF produces PolyTHF with an annual capacity of 250,000 tons at its sites in Louisiana, US; Ludwigshafen, Germany; Ulsan, Korea; and Shanghai, China.
