BASF re-shapes its textile business

18/03/2013
BASF has announced that it will re-shape its textile chemicals business, putting an increased focus on the Asia Pacific region and high-value applications for what it calls premium textile articles.

Global research and development activities for textiles will move to a new centre in Shanghai.

François Desné, senior vice-president for textile chemicals, said: “We are re-shaping our business set-up to strengthen our long-term ability to compete in a rapidly changing market environment.”

Specific examples of areas the textile chemicals will focus on include “value-adding steps” such as printing and finishing while providing solutions for the manufacturing of premium textile articles.

The planned measures, which will also affect BASF’s leather business, will lead to a reduction of about 65 positions globally, including 29 at corporate headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Growth in markets such as China, India and Turkey will lead to the creation of 23 new jobs in those areas. BASF expects to complete the planned measures by end of 2014.
