Red Dot success for Vaude backpack

German outdoor brand Vaude was among the winners of the 2013 Red Dot awards. Its Bulin backpack won in the outdoor, leisure and sports category.

Red Dot is an international product design prize awarded each year by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. It is open to designers in various fields of manufacturing.

Vaude decided to produce the Bulin entirely in Germany, the first time it has done this for a backpack since 1990. As part of the process it is using technology such as a high-frequency welding process to make the seams waterproof.

The backpack is being produced in a strictly limited edition and with “a clean ecological footprint”, the company said on announcing its success at the red dot awards; production emissions are completely “carbon-compensated”. The 30-litre and 40-litre versions became available in specialist mountain sports shops in March.

Philipp Ziegler, the product designer responsible for the Bulin, commented: “The Bulin concentrates Vaude’s entire technical expertise and its mountain sports know-how into one product: conception, design and manufacturing all took place under one roof in Obereisenbach. This gives it a very clean design paired with exceptional durability.”
