Cambodia: Textile workers say wage rise not sufficient

21/03/2013
The Cambodian government has agreed to raise the minimum wage for garment and footwear workers to $80 per month, but unions said they would not be content until it is increased to $100.

A meeting between the government, unions and Garment Manufacturers Association (GMAC) agreed to raise the minimum from $61 to $73, plus an additional $5 as a health benefit and $2 from GMAC, according to local reports.

The announcement follows months of deadlock by negotiating parties. Around 70 representatives had attended initial talks and many said they would continue fighting for the $100 minimum. The new minimum comes into effect on May 1.

The textile industry is Cambodia’s third-largest earner, employing about 300,000.
