A project that links multinational companies and their factories to workplace programmes that increase women’s health awareness has received $1.8 million from the Dutch government.

Sportswear and outdoor companies including Columbia Sportswear and Timberland are participating in the initiative which involves more than 200,000 workers in eight countries, including Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India and Vietnam.

HERproject was established in 2007 and is described as an efficient and cost-effective way to reach a large and vulnerable population of women. It also benefits business through improved employee loyalty, stronger supplier relationships and a more stable workforce.

“This project has a real and immediate impact on women’s lives by giving them practical, high-quality information about their sexual and reproductive health,” said Rachael Yeager, HERproject director. “This support from the Netherlands will help us with our goal to reach one million female workers by 2015.”
