Cross-sector research vital for European textile industry

Research and innovation are becoming increasingly important for the European textile and clothing industry, with the key being the ability to communicate in the technical terms and ‘market language’ that the end customer is used to.

That was one of the messages to come out of the European Technology Platform’s annual meeting held recently in Brussels.

Paolo Canonico, chairman of the Technology Platform, said: “The traditional fibre-yarn-fabric-end product supply chain thinking becomes less relevant in a world in which any innovative company in the supply chain can create added value provided it can effectively communicate its proposition with a brand, OEM or influential end customer.”

European Commission speakers encouraged cross-sectoral research and highlighted the role the ETP will play as a relay between industry and the EU on innovation. They stressed that a more comprehensive approach to public funding should be pushed by the ETP to make sure EU funds are complemented with funding sources from national and regional level.

The event served as the official launch of the ETP as an independent legal entity. The presidents of the three founder organisations - European textile research and technology organisations (TEXTRANET), the European textile universities (AUTEX) and EURATEX - highlighted the importance of a closer collaboration between industry, institutes and universities at European level.

EURATEX CEO Alberto Paccanelli said: “If we make sure the partners we have connected to this network work together even more effectively and grow the network, I am sure we have the winning formula that can carry our ETP towards a bright future.”
