India: Sports goods industry seeks withdrawal of excise duty

28/03/2013
Manufacturers of footballs, cricket bats, hockey sticks and tennis racquets in India have appealed for the excise duty to be lifted.

The majority of these businesses are small to medium-sized enterprises, which are requesting the same deal as the ready-made garments industry, exempted from the duty in India’s recent budget announcement.

Pran Chadha, managing director of Jalandhar-based Universal Sports Industries, told Indian publication the Business Standard: "Our sales in the domestic market have been flat over the last two years, due to the imposition of excise duty in the 2011-12 Budget. In order to give the industry a boost, the government must exempt it from the ambit of excise duty."

Prior to 2011 there had been no excise duty on sports goods but it had been levied at 2% in the 2012 Budget.

The companies affected supply to brands such as Reebok, Puma and Slazenger.
