Scio IT, the company that worked with Zara’s parent group Inditex at the end of last year to launch a new safety suit for workers on fishing boats, presented the innovation to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in March.

The presentation took place in London, which took place in London, was part of a series of ongoing discussions the IMO is engaged in to improve safety and working conditions at sea.

Safe to Sea, the system designed by Scio IT, comprises an easy-to-wear ergonomically designed special exposure suit to allow fishermen to do their work unimpeded. Integrated into the clothing is an electronic communications system to alert on-board colleagues and the emergency services if a member of the crew goes overboard.

After the London presentation, Scio IT director Jaime Casals said he was pleased that Spanish innovation had attracted the attention of the IMO. He said the system would continue to evolve and expressed the hope that wider interest would make the technology “more competitive” and allow his company make Safe to Sea available for maritime sports enthusiasts too.
