Nike welcomes Ikea’s investment in waterless dyeing

Furniture group Ikea's investment in waterless dyeing will help to scale-up the process for dyeing polyester and develop machines for dyeing cotton, according to Nike.

The US sportswear brand became a strategic partner of Dutch dyeing company DyeCoo in February 2012 in a move it said reinforced its “long-term strategy and deep commitment to innovation and sustainability”.

DyeCoo’s technology avoids the large amount of water and chemicals used in traditional dyeing processes by using recycled carbon dioxide.

Nike said at the time: “We believe this technology has the potential to revolutionise textile manufacturing, and we want to collaborate with progressive dye houses, textile manufacturers and consumer apparel brands to scale this technology and push it throughout the industry.”

Nike’s strategic partnerships group, the Sustainable Business & Innovation Lab, worked with Ikea GreenTech, the group's venture capital arm, throughout the investment process.

Nike vice-president of sustainable business and Innovation Hannah Jones said: “A key objective for Nike, when investing in DyeCoo, was to scale the technology to benefit consumers, business and the environment. We’re delighted Ikea shares a similar objective to accelerate development of more sustainable materials and manufacturing processes.”

DyeCoo Textile Systems was founded in March 2008 and claims to be the world's first supplier of industrial CO2 dyeing equipment.
