Outdoor industry figure to take senior US government job

The chief executive of outdoor and sports co-operative REI, Sally Jewell, has been asked by the US Senate to become the next secretary of the department of the interior. Ms Jewell has accepted and will move to Washington DC to carry out the role, which involves responsibility for what the US federal government refers to as the country’s “great outdoors”.

She has been chief executive of REI for the past eight years and spent the previous five years as the chief operating officer of the outdoor clothing and footwear company.

Commentators in Washington DC have said it is unusual for a business person to be given the role as it is “usually reserved for career politicians”.

Brian Unmacht will take over as interim chief executive of REI.
