The wool industry celebrated the Loro Piana Challenge Cup on April 16 in Hong Kong, with the challenge being to decide the finest bale of merino wool produced in 2012. The competition is between Australia and New Zealand.

In 16 years of the competition, run by high-end Italian clothing company Loro Piana, the winner on 14 occasions has been Australia, but the winner this time was the Lindis Ridges farm in New Zealand, owned by wool grower Anna Emmerson.

Every year Loro Piana engages Australian and New Zealand wool producers in the challenge, involving a jury formed by the presidents of the Australian Superfine Wool Growers’ Association and the director of the New Zealand Stud Merino Breeders Society. The panel judges certified bales of wool, which must comply with specific weight, length and strength standards, to be allowed into the competition.

At the ceremony in Hong Kong, chief executive Pier Luigi Loro Piana, said: “This award celebrates the professionalism, the skills and the passion so typical of these farms. Thanks to their constant efforts, the wool industry can count on quality and fineness, which was inconceivable more than 10 years ago.”

He said that the wool winning the competition these days is typically 2.5 microns finer than the yarns of ten years ago. Anna Emmerson’s winning bale was 10.6 micron.
