Oeko-Tex praises Swiss yarn producer

Yarn producer Hermann Bühler has become the latest brand to be named a “company of the month” in the run-up to the Sustainability Awards hosted by environmental certifier Oeko-Tex.

Bühler has manufacturing facilities in Wintherthur, Switzerland, and in a factory in Jefferson in the US. It specialises in processing American extra-long fibre staple Supima cotton, which is used to make Lenzing’s Micro Modal Edelweiss and Micro Tencel yarns, among other products.

The yarn manufacturer has both Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 and Oeko-Tex Standard 100plus.

Bühler CEO Martin Kägi said: “Products which are harmless from a human ecology point of view are a must today. Manufacturers as well as end customers want safety. It starts with the selection of the fibres and continues with the use of renewable energy sources all the way to short transport routes of the products to our customers in Europe. Beyond this our machinery is constantly being monitored and optimised with regard to yarn quality and productivity.”

The company has been producing yarn from American extra long fibre staple cotton from organic farming since 1994. The production of the range ‘SwissCotton Organic’ is CO2 free as it uses no fossil fuels, and electricity is generated in company-owned, local hydroelectric power stations which supply around 10% of the total required energy. The company’s Rainbow technology allows dyeing without adding salt or sodium carbonate.
