Ashworth launches petition as golfers demand shorts

Golf apparel brand Ashworth Golf has launched a campaign on social media aimed at provoking discussion on the acceptability of wearing shorts on the course.

Prominent players including Justin Rose, Justin Leonard, Sean O’Hair, Retief Goosen and Johnson Wagner have taken part in a promotional video complaining that women players on the PGA tour are allowed to wear shorts while men are not. They support a petition that Ashworth, a TaylorMade-adidas brand, has launched on the issue.

TaylorMade-adidas golf chief marketing officer, Bob Maggiore, commented: “We always strive to make golf relevant and fun, and who knows, maybe being comfortable in shorts will simply increase performance. Either way, it’s an entertaining conversation.”

Ashworth’s spring-summer 2013 clothing collection certainly includes shorts, with one of the highlights being the Microfiber Mini Check Flat Front Short. The company describes them as soft to the touch with good moisture-wicking capabilities to provide comfort on and off the course. The shorts feature double-welt pockets and are made from 98% polyester and 2% spandex.
