US: Children’s activewear grows 15%

The children’s activewear market in the US grew 15% in the year to the end of March and is worth an estimated $4.4 billion, according to consultancy NPD Group.

It outpaced the growth of the total children’s apparel market, which grew 3% to $30 billion.

NPD said quality matters less in children’s wear. “Kids grow out of their clothes quickly but have their favourites that they wear more often, so parents are hesitant to purchase top of the line activewear,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group.

Mass merchants and national chains shared 40% of the children’s activewear business, while sports specialty stores sold 12%. The average cost for girls’ activewear was $10, an increase of 8%, and the average cost of boys’ activewear rose 4% to $11.
