Cotton Australia asks for mercy over energy price-hike

03/06/2013
Cotton Australia has called on the Queensland government not to impose in full a proposed 20% increase in electricity prices.

Cotton farmers have complained that an increase of 20% will make it difficult for them to carry out their irrigation programmes.

Cotton Australia’s Queensland policy manager, Michael Murray, told local media that the 20% increase would mean the cost of running irrigators would have risen by 250% in total since 2000, which he described as “simply unsustainable”.
