You cannot have the same durability with fluorine-free repellency, Clariant

Textile chemicals manufacturer Clariant included new fluorine-free chemistry for durable water repellency, Arkophob FFR, among the products highlighted at Techtextil 2013, Frankfurt from June 11-13.

Jochen Schmidt, head of technical service in Europe for the company’s textile chemicals business unit, said during preview presentations to journalists on the day before the exhibition started that Clariant had introduced a fluorine-free repellency solution in response to demand from the market.

However, Mr Schmidt made it clear that Clariant, whose textile business unit is scheduled to transfer to new owners on October 1, remains completely committed to its Nuva N fluorochemicals repellency technology, which is based on C6 chemistry.

“We committed to C6 three years ago,” he explained, “but we have introduced Arkophob too in response to the industry’s demands. The industry wants the same level of performance from fluorine-free solution, but you have to compromise a little bit on durability and I’d say the maximum at the moment for fluorine-free repellency technology would be durability of 20 or 25 washes. With fluorine-based technology, we can have durability of 40, 50 or 60 washes.”
