Oeko-Tex names sustainability award winners

Applications were received from 80 companies from 22 countries, ranging from a specialised finishing operation with only 12 employees to a fully integrated shirt manufacturer with around 55,000 employees.
Sun Hing Industries, a supplier to the lingerie industry, won the environmental management category. The judges were impressed by the company’s water policy, which sees it return water to the Maozhou river in a substantially cleaner condition.
Zip manufacturer YKK won the quality management category. The meticulous quality assurance within the company guarantees products of consistently high quality, regardless of the production location, said the jury. This is based on a vertical production system where everything from raw materials to finished products is manufactured in-house.
Technical fabrics producer Mattes & Ammann won in the social responsibility area. The company provides employees with activities such as parties, company outings, further education courses and sports activities as well as regular health check-ups.
Belgian cellulose fibre company Veramtex won in safety management after impressing with the efficiency of its handling of ammonia. The ammonia can be recovered, cleaned and reused at a rate of over 99% without any air and water pollution.
Cellulose fibres producer Lenzing won the product innovation category, for its pioneering and innovative fibres. The judges said Lenzing is a good example of how to achieve and expand global leadership through a focus on innovation and cooperation with research institutes and universities.
Finally, Indian yarn manufacturer Century Rayon was acknowledged for its sustainable efforts.The jury said the company had taken on a leading role in corporate responsibility, not only in its own country but globally.
