Hemp Inc reports added benefits for textiles

After the planting of its hemp crop in the Gansu Province of Northwest China, US company Hemp Inc has reported the crop’s value from seed alone should be $2 million. "According to the US Department of Agriculture, China produces significantly higher yields per acre of hemp. That's the primary reason we chose China to grow our crop," said Hemp’s president, David Tobias.

The hemp fibres will be blended with cotton or other natural fibres and made into soft, durable garments such as T-shirts.

The company points to research by Envirotextile, a US-based hemp fabric importer, which says demand is growing. China's military is using industrial hemp fabric for uniforms to fight staph infection [caused by staphylococcus bacteria], it says, with tests showing hemp fabrics are resistant to UV and infrared wavelengths, as well as bacteria.

Hemp CEO Bruce Perlowin added: "These tests show antimicrobial and antibacterial attributes of the hemp plant that, along with the Omega fatty acids and protein in the seed and hemp's soil remediation qualities, make for a sustainable crop that is useful in every aspect."
