New technique offers faster vapour permeability testing

UK-based testing instruments manufacturer Versaperm has announced a new technique for faster testing of the breathability, or vapour permeability, of technical fabrics for sports and outdoor clothing.

“Growth in outdoor sports and activities has seen a blossoming in the outdoor clothes and textiles markets,” the company said on announcing the development. “The drive to create new and enhanced materials and features has placed a high demand on the speed and accuracy of testing, especially the all-important breathability, or vapour permeability, of fabrics.”

According to Versaperm, the current ISO standard 15496 for measuring the vapour permeability of textiles is based on the traditional gravimetric technique, which usually takes several weeks to produce a reading. “This is not compatible with the needs of this fast moving market,” it has said.

It has two instruments that can produce this measurement; a gravimetric instrument to meet the exacting requirements of the standards and a faster instrument that can produce results in as little as 30 minutes for some fabrics.

The new technique is ideal for rapid product development and for quality control of textiles and garments, the company said.
