Portuguese experience shows big savings with Huntsman cotton technology

Huntsman Textile Effects developed the technology, Gentle Power Bleach, using enzyme technology from DuPont called PrimaGreen EcoWhite. Ian Burnell, technical and alliances director at Huntsman Textile Effects, now says that applications of the technology at producers including ATB in Portugal are demonstrating savings in water of between 60% and 70% compared to conventional production methods, while Gentle Power Bleach is also allowing the company to produce cotton fabric at lower temperatures. It makes 35,000 kilos of fabric per day.
Dr Kater Hake, vice-president of agricultural and environmental research at Cotton Incorporated, the research and marketing company that works to improve demand for, and profitability of, cotton, has welcomed the development, saying anything that makes cotton production more efficient is good news.
“Globally, 110 million bales of cotton (equivalent to a total of 24 billion kilos) are produced year on year,” Dr Hake has said, “and 50% of the world’s apparel is cotton. The ultimate goal is to make cotton more efficiently, particularly if we can impact the energy and water used in production.”
