A student at the University of Costa Rica wants the university to let her carry on a research programme into rheopexy.

Rheopectic fluids are liquid when at rest but become solid when subjected to external pressure. Chemistry student Yuliana Chaves Chacón has focused on starch and water for her study and says the results are encouraging.

Her work has sparked interest in Costa Rica because rheopectic substances are already being used as a component of protective clothing and equipment for a variety of sports.

Ms Chacón has said she likes the fact that starch is cheap and easy to obtain.
