Tanatex extends fluorine-free finishes range

Bayguard WRS has been developed for cotton and cotton blends with synthetic fibres. The polymers ensure a durable water repellent effect and offer a “pleasant hand feel” to the fabric.
Tanatex says the new concept is a complementary alternative to its existing range, with 3D molecules ensuring articles are waterproof even under extreme circumstances.
“Fluorocarbons are still the state-of-the-art chemistry for water repellents. But this chemistry results in undesirable discharge of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoroctane sulfonate (PFOS) and fluortelomer alcohol (FTOH), because of their bio-accumulative and toxic properties,” it said. “These perfluorinated surfactants (PFS) are side products or unreacted raw materials in the production of fluorocarbons. The industry’s first solution to this problem was to shift from C8 to C6 FC chain length. But due to serious environmental discussions over the last couple of years about impurities and side products in these C6 fluorocarbons, a discussion about possible alternatives again arises: fluorine-free alternatives.”
