Toray’s textile sales grow 13%

06/08/2013
Japanese group Toray has reported a 13% increase in second-quarter (ending June 30) sales in its fibres and textile division to $1.56 billion, boosted by sales of functional inner-wear in Japan and apparel exports.

“There were signs of recovery in exports under the influence of the correction of the strong yen,” said the company.

“While the conditions continued to be tough with Europe remaining mired in economic slump and sluggish domestic demand in China, textile subsidiaries in Southeast Asia and China expanded the sales of value-added products. Also, while the floods in Thailand in October 2011 had affected the operations in the same period a year earlier, the production and sales recovered since then, contributing to the improved performance.”

Operating income in the textiles arm increased 17.6% to $104 million in the quarter.
