Evonik will scale up production bio-based PA12 raw material

German industrial group Evonik has announced it will replace petroleum-based laurin lactam (LL) as a raw material for its polyamide 12 production after a pilot at its factory in Slovakia successfully tested bio-based ω-amino lauric acid (ALS) as an alternative.

“ALS yields an identical compound polyamide 12 (PA 12),” the company said upon announcing that it would increase production of the bio-based raw material to an industrial scale.

Palm oil, which Evonik has already been using as a base for various other chemical products, is the starting material. “In the long term, this alternative raw material makes us less dependent on limited fossil resources,” said Gregor Hetzke, head of Evonik’s performance polymers business unit at the time of the announcement.
