South Korea: Hiking ‘close to national pastime’

The outdoor apparel market in South Korea is growing at a rapid pace – it was worth US$1.1 billion in 2006 and grew to US$5.3 billion in 2012.

Hiking is "close to a national pastime", according to local press, with millions visiting the country's many mountain parks and trails every weekend.

Brands such as the North Face are growing in popularity.  "It's not cheap, but everyone dresses this way and I don't want to look out of place," said hiker Chung Da-Hee. "Anyway, it's good quality and comfortable.”
