Ancient woollen garment uncovered in melting ice

An archaeological project in northern Norway has uncovered a woollen garment preserved for at least 1,600 years under recently melted ice.

Tests on the garment, a hunter’s tunic, have revealed that it was made between 230 and 390 AD and that it contains two kinds of wool, one from a sheep and the other from a lamb. The wool was woven in a diamond twill.

It was found in melting snow on one of the country’s glaciers.
