Alpine athlete should have known better

Spanish ski mountaineer, long-distance runner, mountain biker and duathlete Kílian Jornet drew criticism from the authorities in the French Alps at the start of September after he had to be rescued from the Mont Blanc massif.

Mr Jornet and a woman he was walking with had to be rescued from the Aiguille du Midi by specialist police officers when the weather took a turn for the worse. The couple were wearing only light clothing and shoes.

Local media quoted a local politician in Chamonix, Jean-Louis Verdier, who is also a mountain guide as saying: “We’ve tried to make it very clear that people need to have the right clothing and footwear when they go onto the mountain. It makes me very angry to see someone like this go up there wearing training shoes.”
