Arc’teryx makes down jackets “for everyday wear”

Carl Moriarty, a senior apparel design manager at Canadian outdoor brand Arc’teryx, has explained why he believes down is an important component of so many of the company’s jackets.

“Down is an amazing insulator,” he said in a recent corporate presentation. “It has a very high warmth-to-weight ratio and it also has a unique ability to contour to your body, and this further enhances its thermal efficiency.

Mr Moriarty went on to explain that when the Arc’teryx team began to design its autumn-winter 2013-2014 down apparel collection, it found that people had “started to live in their down products every day”. The comfort and thermal efficiency of these clothes led to wearers deciding they were suited to everyday life and no longer just for taking on expeditions into the forests or mountains.

This has meant making the brand’s latest down apparel collection more durable. Jackets in the collection are lightweight and compressible, as well as warm, he said.
