Shell's ethylene plant faces lengthy maintenance shutdown

Royal Dutch Shell is expected to shut its 800,000 tonnes per year ethylene cracker in Bukom, Singapore, for maintenance and expansion works in the fourth quarter of 2014.

The steam cracker currently provides ethylene via pipelines to a large monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant in Jurong Island, where Shell is adding new petrochemical units to make use of the raw material. MEG is used to produce polyester fibres for clothing.

The plant is expected to be closed for about three months, according to industry sources.
