Miroglio makes water consumption improvements thanks to e.volution

Italian textile producer Miroglio has announced that a new system for printing fabrics that it introduced in February has achieved certification from Italian environmental and ethical standards body ICEA.

Commercial director, Chiaretto Calò, has said that the new system, e.volution, which uses digital printers for printing on polyester, is tapping into a wider trend towards digital printing. He said that Miroglio’s capacity has increased to 12 million metres of digitally printed fabric per year.

He went on to say that a promised boost from e.volution to Miroglio’s efforts to cut its water consumption was coming to fruition. “Textile producion is water-intensive,” he said, “but in the last two years we have been able to reduce our water consumption by more than half.”

With a total capacity across its whole business (not just digital) of 16 million metres of fabric per year, its water consumption two years ago was 800 million litres. Today, this has come down to 350 million litres. “That’s still a lot, but it’s a big improvement, and we will continue to improve,” Chiaretto Calò said. He explained that the most efficient technology on the market could reduce water consumption by as much as 90%, but said it was difficult to scale it up to industrial production levels for all products and all colours. “But that’s the trend,” he said.
