Putin attends polypropylene plant opening ceremony
Russian President Vladimir Putin was at the opening ceremony of one of the world’s largest polypropylene production facilities on October 15.
The Tobolsk-Polymer plant reportedly cost Russian petrochemical company Sibur Holding 60 billion rubles ($1.9 billion) to build and comprises two units: a 510 kilo tonnes per annum (ktpa) propane dehydrogenation propylene production unit and a 500 ktpa polypropylene production unit.
Leonid Mikhelson, chairman of Sibur Holding’s board of directors, said: “Tobolsk-Polymer is an important stage of the corporate strategy of advanced processing to derive value-added petrochemical products, including basic polymers, and meet domestic demand while achieving import substitution.”
Russia reportedly produced more than 880 kt of polypropylene in 2012, and the material is used for a range of applications, including various applications within the textile industry.
