ISPO organisers name 2014 Brand New winners

The organisers of the ISPO exhibition, which next takes place in Munich from January 26-29, have announced the winners of the 2014 ISPO Brand New Awards.

Open to all outdoor-industry start-ups that are less than four years old and have never exhibited at ISPO before, the top 50 entrants to the competition win a place at the Brand New Village on the exhibition floor.

This year, there were 264 entries from 31 countries. An independent jury consisting of former winners reviewed the entries and named winners in seven categories (hardware winter, hardware summer, style, digital, fitness, accessories and sportswear) plus one overall winner.

The overall winner in 2014 is the Oru Kayak from the US. The product is a foldable kayak that takes only five minutes to assemble. The kayak is made from a single sheet of plastic but folds into place. Its inventors were inspired by the Japanese art of origami. The kayak weighs less than 12 kilos.

Oru Kayak was started as a crowd-funding project on kickstarter.com and reached its target of $80,000 in only five hours.
