Switzerland-based testing institute Oeko-Tex has announced a 6.3% increase in Standard 100 certificates issued this year, with almost two-thirds awarded to Asian countries.

Most of the 12,555 companies to be granted the certification  - which monitors harmful substances in the textiles sector - are from China, Germany, Turkey, India, Bangladesh and Italy.

At its recent annual meeting, Oeko-Tex managers said they were impressed by the response the new STeP certification, introduced in April. Hermann Bühler, Mattes & Ammann, Weberei Appenzell, Gebr Otto and Pascual y Bernabeu have gained STeP with manufacturers such as eterna Mode currently undergoing assessment.
