SnowSports Industries America (SIA), the snow sports industry’s member-owned trade association, and consultancy Leisure Trends have published figure for for August to October 2013 which show Alpine or cross-country skiing is growing rapidly in the US, buoying overall sales for apparel, accessories and equipment, which rose 3% against the same period last year.

Alpine touring/randonee equipment sales increased 26% in value and 23% in units sold.

Backcountry accessories sales including beacons, probes and shovels increased 46% in value.
Cross-country ski sales increased 7% in value and 13% in volume. More than 11,000 cross country boots were sold.

“Promising snow conditions in the critical weeks late of November and December bode well for the market,” said the association. “Snow explains about three quarters of the variance in snow sports sales season to season. Overall, the market has more than 19 million participants in skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, telemark and alpine touring. This season, we project that consumers will spend more than $3.5 million on equipment, apparel and accessories.”
