Greenpeace points the finger at clothing brands again

Campaign group Greenpeace issued a statement on January 14 alleging that tests in China have shown hazardous chemicals at excessive levels in children’s clothing from brands including adidas and American Apparel.

It said American Apparel was among the brands whose products showed up in testing to have “high levels” of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), a group of chemicals that break down in the environment to form nonylphenol (NP), which is of concern to health and environmental authorities in many parts of the world.

It also said the course of tests showed an adidas swimsuit contained perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA) at a concentration higher than the limit the brand specifies in its own restricted substance list.
